My book report was on ââ¬Å"Esperanza Risingâ⬠by Pam Muà ±oz Ryan. The genre of this book is Historical Fiction. The publisher is Scholastic. It has a total of 253 pages plus the authorââ¬â¢s notes. Esperanza Rising was published in the year of 2000. Some unusual facts about this book was that it had some Spanish words in it but English after so you know what it means. This book is a Pure Belpre Award winning book. The Pure Belpre Award means excellent portrayal of Latino experience in childrens literature. I chose this book to read because the author seemed familiar and the cover of the book really caught my attention including the title. Heââ¬â¢s the son of Alfonso and Hortensia, who both work for Esperanzaââ¬â¢s family as their servants. They both grew up together on the ranch as kids. The major conflict in this story starts when a group of bandits captures her papa and kill him and his two evil greedy stepbrothers take over the land and tries to make mama marry Tio Luis. When she disagrees, they do everything in their power to make their life difficult. So as the story unfolds, she ends up marrying him. But they come up with a plan to cross the border and go to the United States so they can work and get money, and most importantly get away from the horrible life in Mexico because of the stepbrothers. They all go to California except Abuelita because she wasnââ¬â¢t feeling well to get a better opportunity in advance. The plot starts out with Esperanza and her papa spending time together. He tells her that the earth is alive and if you listen closely, you can hear its heartbeat. Esperanza was impatient though. But he tells her you have to stay still and be quiet. Papa tells her ââ¬Å"wait a little while and the fruit will fall into your hand.â⬠This was the main theme of the story because it means when you wait, something good will come. After that she hears it and gets happy. As you read the book, the saying gets repeated. The rising action of the book would be when papa got murdered by the bandits. The conflict resolution would
Youth Gang Violence in Australia - 2230 Words
YOUTH GANG VIOLENCE IN AUSTRALIA A report by Sam Brown The legal argument being stated in this report refers to the developing issue of youth gang criminology that has somewhat flourished and further advanced in the suburban areas of Australia since the 1990s. The term ââ¬Ëgangââ¬â¢ is debated throughout the cases presented to psychological and criminal observers, argued to be diverse in definition because of its variety to identifiers. What causes the most uncertainty towards the issue is the query of the agenda behind youth gang violence, which is a factor that must be taken into consideration in performing action in anticipating further crimes. Habitually the breaking news of street or group violence that has any involvement of juveniles and police is distinguished as ââ¬Ëyouth gang activityââ¬â¢ and is repressed accordingly by the police force, even though gang membership might not be the case. Typically viewed upon by stereotypes, assembled from occurrences and news releases in Americaââ¬â¢s history of gang violence, the law enforcement in the past has taken contentious action against gang suspects but, through observations, police force aggression has been perceived of being at a higher risk of causing resentment from adolescents when dealing with the suspected ââ¬Ëmembersââ¬â¢. In fact, severe penalties such as detention have been associated with an increased likelihood of re-offending and a 2002 study showed that young people who went to a youth justice conference were 15-20% less likely to re-offend than young people who went to court for similar offence. A report released by the NSW Ombudsman in 1999 showed that young people are far more likely than adults to be searched and moved on by police. Liquidated Damages and Extensions of Time
Question: Discuss about the Liquidated Damages and Extensions of Time In Construction Contract. Answer: A party may claim Liquidated damages if its provisions has been made in the contract and the claimant can justify the breach of contract by the other party. A liquidated damages clause must clearly specify the amount of money that the defaulting party has to pay as damages for failing to perform as per terms of the contract, (Eggleston, 2009). To make the charge enforceable in the court of law, the clause of liquidated damages must fulfil the following two criteria. The court is likely to enforce the liquidated damages provision, provided the claimant is able to justify that the damages have incurred because of a breach of contract. Secondly, the amount should be a reasonable one and definitely should not be a penalty. The courts usually take into consideration the fact whether the amount was reasonable and was expressed clearly at the time of signing the contract by the parties rather than at the time when the breach occurred, (Emanuel, 2006). In the light of these factors, it can be concluded that Mullers satisfy both the above cited criteria. Justification and reasonableness of the amount had been clearly mentioned and was based on the justifiable assumption of loss due to non-receipt of rent in case of delay. It is not a penalty, but claim for income lost due to delay in completion of the house. Mullers can surely justify the claim in the court of law and they have the right to invoke the provisions of Liquidated damages and recover their loss from Light, (Twomey, Jennings Greene, 2016). Why Did Eva Smith Die Essay Example
Why Did Eva Smith Die Paper An Inspector Calls is a play written by John Boynton Priestley in 1945, just after the end of World War II. Its first performance was in Moscow; its first British performance was in The New Theatre in 1946. The play is based around the suicide of a young girl called Eva Smith who committed suicide. The main characters are Inspector Goole, The Birlings a well to do middle class family and Gerald Croft a business associate of Mr. Birling. In order to understand Priestleys examination of Evas death, it is important to understand the historical context of the time the play was written and when it was set. In 1945 the world was changing socially, culturally and politically. Peoples opinions on certain issues, for example, abortion and womens rights, were just beginning to take shape into their modern form. The play is set in 1912, eleven years after Queen Victorias death. Her death had preceded several years of weak rule by Edward VII. Edwards hedonistic lifestyle had been a role model for the British upper middle class. The play is set in a fictive town, Brumley, similar to major towns in the midlands such as Birmingham. The years building up before World War I were very restless for many countries, especially Britain. The lower classes were changing into a more powerful group of people for instance they were organising trade unions. The role of women in British society also was changing rapidly and the suffragettes were fighting for womens right to vote. I think J. B Priestley set the play in this time because he wanted to highlight the middle classs attitude towards social responsibility, social change and their hope to maintain the status quo. One of the reasons why Eva died was because of the dismissive attitudes of families like the Birlings and their remoteness from the working class. Reading the play now or when it was written gives us the benefit of hindsight on the time the play was set. Arthur Birlings certainty that war would never come. Russia would never rise and the Titanic would never sink, proves that his trust in the status quo was misplaced. unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable. Thats what youve got to keep your eye on, facts like that, progress like that and not a few German officers talking nonsense and a few scaremongers here making a fuss about nothing The years after the play was set were filled with war and the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage, demonstrating the smug ignorance and complacency of Birling and people like him. I also think that J. B Priestley wanted to highlight the massive, but closing, gap between rich and poor between the times the play was written and the time the play was set. For example, the entire play is set in the Birlings massive, lavish dining room with lashings of gold and silverware everywhere. This contrasts with the living conditions of the poor; as represented by Eva Smith in the play, who had lived in a miserable back room. This contrast would also resonate with a post-war audience coming to terms with a more democratic distribution of wealth. The play begins with The Birlings: Arthur, Sheila, Sybil, Eric and Sheilas fianci , Gerald, celebrating Sheila and Geralds engagement. The maid comes in to announce the unexpected arrival of an Inspector Goole. Inspector Goole begins by questioning Arthur, the head of the family. Inspector: I think you remember Eva Smith Birling: Yes I do, she was one of my employees, and I discharged her This demonstrates Birlings dismissive attitude towards employees; he is not at all embarrassed or ashamed at having sacked Eva. She had been one of his workers. He had discharged her from his employ because she and several others had organized a strike for better wages. Mr. Birling, regarding himself as a hard headed man of business, refused and fired Eva. I think he fired her, not only because she helped in the strike, but also because she was a woman. The evidence above shows the attitude towards women at the time. Eva was also very hard headed and determined to get what she wanted, this probably would have made Mr. Birling resent her enough to fire her. I think this shows the general attitude towards women in the beginning of the 20th century: that they should just be tools for mans work; they did not even have the right to vote. This contributed to Evas death because it sparked a chain of events, through each member of the family until they each shared the blame. Mr. Birlings attitude towards social responsibility only seems to be one thing: Look after yourself and your family, forget everyone else. This is supported when he says: But the way some or these cranks talk and write now, youd think everybody has to look after everybody else, as if we were all mixed together like bees in a hive This attitude contributed to Evas death because, had Mr. Birling cared at all about Eva, he might not have fired her and therefore the chain of events would never had happened. This quote also shows how he is in denial about the social changes taking place around him. Later in the play, the Inspector began to question Sheila. It is revealed that Sheila had something to do with Evas death and that she feels guilty about it when she gives a half-stifled sob and runs out. When Sheila returns, we find out that she had, earlier that year, complained to Evas boss in a jealous rage when she thought she caught Eva laughing at her trying on a dress. She threatened to withdraw her familys account with Milwards the shop Eva was working in at the time. We learn that this has contributed to Evas death because the Inspector explains that this was the last real steady job she had, all because of Sheilas jealousy of this prettier, younger girl. Thus continuing the chain of events. We next discover the involvement of Gerald Croft in Evas demise. After Sheila had confessed, the Inspector mentioned that Eva had changed her name to Daisy Renton; at hearing this Gerald immediately gave himself away by reacting in a startled way. It is revealed that Gerald had an affair with Eva the previous summer. He met her in a bar of ill repute, being harassed by another respectable man. When he found out that Eva had no money and was living in a miserable back room, he felt compelled to be the hero and let her stay in one of his friends houses. They had fallen in love, but, inevitably, it had not lasted. Not only were there the differences in social class and power but Gerald was involved with Sheila as well. To end his affair with Eva, Gerald had given her some money and she went away to some seaside place. This contributed to Evas death because it pushed her slightly further towards the edge emotionally. She was already emotionally fragile and now it was getting even worse for her. When Gerald says: I became at once the most important person in her life it shows Evas dependence on others and her weakness without them. Gerald left a small amount of money for Eva to get on with, when these funds ran out, it probably contributed to the feelings of hopelessness and powerlessness that contributed to Evas death. As the play progresses we learn of Sybils role in Evas death. Sybil Birling, in my opinion, is a perfect example of the arrogance, toffery and indifference of upper middle class women to people like Eva. Sybil cares of nothing but her social status which she clearly shows when she denies Eva aid from her charity; this action shows that Sybil only does charity work for the social status it creates for her. When Sybil says: She was claiming elaborate feelings and scruples that were simply absurd in a girl of her position it shows that Sybil Birling thinks that women of a lesser social status have less of a right to feelings and emotions than she does. This contributed to Evas death because if Sybil did not think so hypocritically and arrogantly then Eva would have been accepted by the charity organization and she may never have committed suicide. I think that Eric Birlings actions played a major role in Evas death, but one may argue that his actions are not as driven by socially pervasive attitudes as the other characters in the play. For example, Sybil Birlings clear belief that she is better than anyone of a lower class is a pervasive attitude, but Eric abandoning Eva is the type of thing that often happens in relationships. Eric, along with Sheila, is part of a new generation of people that care less about social status and more about others, so maybe J. B Priestley wanted to show that social conventions themselves were changing to fit the new generation. On the other hand, you could argue that Eric would have been far less likely to abandon a girl of his own social class, and that in this regard his treatment of Eva was typical. Eric contributed to Evas death because her pregnancy could have affected her mental health, causing depression which continues the chain of events. The prospect of becoming a single mother may have been overwhelming because of the way unmarried mothers were stigmatized at that time. Although we learn that Eva has in fact killed herself; through Priestleys exploration of each characters role, we discover the large part that social and political factors have played in her demise, and how, to some degree, each of them carries some responsibility for the tragedy, even if they refuse to accept it. In conclusion, I believe that above all, the massive gap between working class and rich people was responsible for the tragic stories of people like Eva Smith. The rich people of the time gave no hint that they cared for the classes below, Mr. Birling and Mrs. Birling did not care that what they had done to Eva caused her suicide, they were much more concerned with retaining their wealth and social status. Sheila and Eric, on the other hand felt guilty about what they had done demonstrating that perhaps their generation had a better attitude. J. B Priestley cleverly used the whodunnit genre to explore social attitudes, class differences and their consequences for people like Eva Smith and The Birlings. The most telling statement in the whole play is when Inspector Goole says One Eva Smith has gone but there are millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still out there. This quote sums up J. B. Priestleys opinion that things like this happen everyday, but individuals cannot abrogate their responsibilities. The play addresses multiple issues of importance such as morality, social responsibility, highlighting the political and social changes in the 20th century. Everything we said had happened, really had happened. If it didnt end tragically, then thats lucky for us. But it might have done.

An Everlasting Light â⬠Theology Essay
An Everlasting Light ââ¬â Theology Essay Free Online Research Papers An Everlasting Light Theology Essay Itââ¬â¢s a breathtaking experience when over 40 hot-air balloons light up the night sky in an evening balloon glow at the annual Centralia Balloon Fest. Vast crowds of people watch spellbound at the awesome sight. Joyful smiles spread across the faces of children and adults alike. I never tire of watching the glowing tear drop shaped balloons lighting up the darkness. Mankind was not made for darkness but for light. Why? Because ââ¬Å"God is light.â⬠This summer while visiting Florida, my wife and I enjoyed visiting a Thomas Kinkade Art Gallery. Thomas Kinkade has been called ââ¬Å"The Painter of Lightâ⬠. Just as I love to watch a colorful hot-air balloon chasing the horizon, I am also drawn to the luminous light of Kinkadeââ¬â¢s paintings. Whether itââ¬â¢s lighthouses of the east coast, a beautiful countryside, grand buildings of a city, majestic churches, bridges, or light washed seascapes, the light always seems to shine out. Thomas Kinkade believes that art has the power to touch peopleââ¬â¢s hearts and change their lives. Kinkade attributes the hallmark glow of his paintings to his deep Christian faith and his relationship with the Light of the World ââ¬â Jesus Christ. It is the foundation of all of his work. Jesus said, ââ¬Å"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do p eople light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heavenâ⬠(Matthew 5:14-16). You were created to light up the darkness around you. I love to be outside at night and gaze up at all of the twinkling points of light piercing through the dark sky. Just think about the thousands of miles the light has traveled. When I was a child, we would shine a flashlight and aim it at one star. A friend told me that even after you turned the flashlight off the light would keep going ââ¬â on and on, mile after mile, year after year until it eventually reached the star. Perhaps that concept is not scientifically accurate. But that image is still in my mind. It speaks of manââ¬â¢s deep desire to lead a life that matters over the course of our life ââ¬â one that will make a difference even after we are gone. How can we let our lights shine up and beyond the stars? We can live our lives with eternity in view. We can leave a heritage by the life we live and the lives we touch in some way. There is a light that never dims and never dies. Itââ¬â¢s the Everlasting Light. Isaiah prophesied of that light. ââ¬Å"No longer will you need the sun or moon to give you light, for the Lord will be your everlasting light and he will be your glory. The sun will never set; the moon will not go down. For the Lord will be your everlasting light. Your days of mourning will come to an end. All your people will be righteousâ⬠(Isaiah 60:19 NLT). That prophecy not only points to the Everlasting Light that will come to the nation of Israel in the person of the Messiah, but it points to the one announced by John the Baptist, who is the true light, who shone in the darkness, to give light to everyone. (See John 1:1-17.) Let Him shine on you! When I was a little boy, I was afraid of the dark. At that time, we had a coal-burning stove to heat the house. My dad would often send me out into the night, down the long, dark path to load up the old coal bucket. The dark shadows terrified me. But if I was given a flashlight, I wasnââ¬â¢t nearly as afraid. Better yet, if my dad went with me, I was even braver. God later revealed that I could have an everlasting light who would always be with me and in me. As a small shepherd boy, David experienced that light and wrote and sung this Psalm, ââ¬Å"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear; the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraidâ⬠(Psalm 27). When you allow the Lord to be your light and salvation, you do not need to be afraid ââ¬â not even of death. When Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into a dark dungeon, they let their light shine and began singing praises to God at midnight. God sent an earthquake and caused all the prisonerââ¬â¢s chains to fall off and the prison doors to swing open. The jailer was terrified and was about to take his own life. Paul called out to him. The jailer called for a light and cried, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Sirs, what must I do to be saved?ââ¬â¢ They replied, ââ¬ËBelieve on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved along with your entire householdââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Acts 16:16-34). Believing on Jesus Christ who died on the cross for his sins and arose victorious over death brought light and life eternal to the jailer and his entire family. What a spiritual legacy he left to shine on forever. Does the Everlasting Light, light up your life? He will if you believe and receive Jesus into your heart today. Heââ¬â¢ll be a Light Everlasting shining through the darkness.
